The Department of Food Science and Technology , KNUST officially launched their 20th anniversary celebration on 17th July, 2024 at the Allotey Auditorium, College of Science.

The event was chaired by the Provost of the College, Prof. Leonard K. Amekudzi with the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson as the Special Guest of Honour and Dr. Frank Asante (also the Deputy Managing Director of the Cocoa Processing Company (CPC), Ghana) as the Keynote Speaker.

The head of Department, Prof. Mrs. Faustina Wireko-Manu welcome everybody to the official lunch after giving a brief history of the Department.

The keynote speaker for the occasion Dr. Frank Asante, in his remarks, emphasized the need for continuous collaboration between the Department and Industry. Dr. Asante who is also, a proud Alumnus of the Department, congratulated all members of the Department while recalling some fond memories he had on campus as a student. The expressed how proud he was the Department had produced over 650 peer-reviewed journals with over a 400, 000 reading audience according to ResearchGate statistics.

The Provost in his remarks, also emphasized the role of KNUST as a premier University that continuous to produce a high caliber of students who are pivotal to the sustainability and growth of the country. He congratulated the Department of Food Science and Technology for their efforts of in this regard and attaining 20 years.

The Vice-Chancellor in remarks, expressed gratitude to all industry players for their continuous partnership with KNUST and for believing in KNUST. She emphasized the importance of food in our everyday life and how crucial it was that the Department was celebrating 20 years of contributing in such regard. She concluded by admonishing every to "eat their food as their medicine and not eat their medicine as their food".

The launch came to an end with a note from the Interim General Secretary of the Ghana Association of Food Scientists and Technologists - Prof. Jacob K.Agbenorhevi, which was followed by acknowledgements of key founding members of the Department including Prof. James Oldham, Prof. Williams Otoo Ellis, Prof. Mrs. Ibok Oduro, Mr. Barimah and also, the Vice-Chancellor and Provost for their continuous support of the University.

Also present were the Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Computational Sciences, Former Dean of the Faculty Biosciences, The College Registrar, Accountant and Counselor.

Senior members from other Departments also graced the occasion together with Alumni of the Department, members of the media and representative high schools.

The Chairperson of the Planninf Committee for the 20th Anniversary - Dr. Abena Boakye, also gave her closing remarks by expressing gratitute to everyone present and also thanking the University management for supporting the Department throughout all these years. Poster sessions and exhibitions were held outside the auditorium after the launch.
