KNUST Food Science and Technology Department Welcomes Freshers
The Department of Food Science and Technology at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in collaboration with the Association of Food Science and Technology Students (AFSTS), held an orientation programme for newly admitted students on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the College of Science.
The event brought together faculty members, student leaders and first-year students for an engaging session aimed at introducing freshers to university life, academic expectations, career opportunities and the exciting possibilities within the field of Food Science and Technology.
Welcoming the Next Generation of Food Scientists

The Head of Department, Prof. Jacob Agbenohevi, officially welcomed the students and introduced them to the Department, its academic staff and laboratory personnel. He highlighted the importance of embracing the opportunities available throughout their academic journey and encouraged students to develop a strong sense of belonging within the Department.
Prof. Agbenohevi also introduced students to the Ghana Association of Food Science and Technology (GHAFOST), emphasising the value of professional networking, mentorship and active participation in activities that promote the advancement of food science in Ghana.
The programme was attended by several faculty members, including Prof. Faustina Wireko-Manu, Prof. Alemawor and Dr. Janet Quaisie, who joined in welcoming the new students.
Exploring Exciting Careers in Food Science and Technology

One of the highlights of the orientation was an interactive career presentation delivered by Dr. Nana Baah Pepra-Ameyaw, who introduced students to the diverse professional opportunities available to graduates of Food Science and Technology.
The presentation explored career pathways across food processing and manufacturing, product development, food safety and quality assurance, research, entrepreneurship and other emerging areas of the food industry.
Using interactive QR-code activities, Dr. Pepra-Ameyaw invited students to share their motivations for choosing Food Science and Technology and identify the sectors in which they hoped to build their careers.
The session encouraged students to look beyond the classroom and begin envisioning how their knowledge and skills could contribute to innovation, food security, public health and the growth of Ghana's food industry.
He also outlined important academic and professional milestones that students could work towards at each level of their undergraduate studies, encouraging them to approach their university education with purpose and ambition.
Building a Strong Foundation for Academic Success

The Department's Examinations Officer, Dr. Leonard De Souza, provided students with essential guidance on academic requirements, course registration, assessment procedures and university examination regulations.
He emphasised the importance of consistent lecture attendance, active participation in academic activities and timely completion of course and biometric registration. He also encouraged students to familiarise themselves with the university's grading system and uphold the highest standards of academic integrity.
In a complementary address, Dr. Eric Owusu Mensah highlighted discipline, effective time management and punctuality as essential ingredients for academic success.
Sharing the motivational message, "If you can dream it, you can achieve it," he encouraged the freshers to remain committed to their aspirations and develop the habits necessary to excel both academically and personally.
Students were also encouraged to demonstrate confidence, ask questions and seek assistance whenever they encountered challenges.
Leadership, Networking and Student Engagement

The President of AFSTS, Mr. Danladi Ibrahim Bukari, welcomed the freshers into the student association and encouraged them to become active members of the departmental community.
He emphasised the importance of building meaningful relationships, participating in student activities and making the most of the academic and professional development opportunities available through AFSTS.
The President also introduced members of the Bukari-Kwarteng-led administration for the 2026/2027 academic year, while committee heads familiarised students with the association's activities and opportunities for involvement.
Freshers were encouraged to stay connected through the association's official social media platforms to receive important updates and announcements.
A Message of Purpose and Opportunity

Delivering an inspiring message to the students, Prof. Ibok Oduro encouraged them to approach their university education with a clear sense of direction.
She emphasised the importance of setting personal and professional goals, remaining focused and positioning oneself to recognise opportunities.
Her central message, "When you have an agenda, you will never miss an opportunity," challenged students to be intentional about their academic journey and make decisions that support their long-term aspirations.
An Exciting Beginning
The orientation provided an important platform for students to interact with faculty, learn about departmental expectations and gain a clearer understanding of the opportunities that await them as future food scientists and technologists.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Miss Priscilla Boakye, followed by a closing prayer led by Miss Benedicta Cobbina, who also served as Master of Ceremonies.
As the 2026/2027 academic year begins, the Department of Food Science and Technology looks forward to nurturing a new generation of innovative, responsible and industry-ready professionals equipped to contribute to Ghana's food and nutrition security, food safety and sustainable development.
The Department warmly welcomes the Class of 2026 and wishes all freshers a successful and fulfilling academic journey at KNUST.
